Description
AS&M has an exciting opportunity for a Systems Engineer - In-space Mechanisms to join the JETS II team!
We are actively searching for qualified candidates for this potential opening; however, we do not have assurance at this time when the position will be finalized and opened. Because we have strong reason to believe the position will be approved soon, we are proceeding with identifying qualified candidates and conducting interviews.
Responsibilities
This position is for a key subject matter expert for in-space mechanisms that will be part of the mechanisms system management team. This position will:
Conduct systems engineering and management oversight of in-space mechanisms for both the International Space Station and Commercial Crew Program. This includes subsystem management of:
Mechanism integration
Separation mechanisms
Latching mechanisms
Flight crew operated mechanisms
Coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering support across NASA and contractor teams throughout the flight hardware development process.
Interface with other systems and subsystems to ensure mission success, crew safety, and overall vehicle health and performance
Prepare information and present as required to program technical and programmatic leadership
Small amount of travel may be necessary
Perform other duties as required
Qualifications
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency may be a requirement for this position.
Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Requisition Qualifications

Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and may be expected to have a related master’s or higher degree and normally possess 15+ years of related experience.
NASA or aerospace mechanical design experience
Human spaceflight hardware design experience
Mechanisms or robotics experience required
Excellent communication skills (in person and in writing)
Proficient with MS Office and Teams (for virtual meetings)
Comfortable presenting to ISS Engineering Review Board
Requisition Preferences
BS degree in engineering (Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering preferred) and at least 5 years of experience
Knowledge of and experience with the NASA flight hardware requirements generation, validation and verification processes
Experience in aerospace separation systems design, development, and flight certification
Experience in mechanical design, development, and flight certification
Knowledge of and experience with the interpretation and application of NASA-STD-5017 to complex mechanical and attachment systems
Knowledge of and experience with the NASA approach to fault tolerance and design risk mitigation
Knowledge of and experience performing dimensional tolerance analyses, including thermal effects and GD&T
Experience with the NASA system management insight/oversight model and approach
Experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams
Ten years of space mechanisms experience
Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.
Work Environment
Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Physical Requirements
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
Equipment and Machines
Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
Attendance
Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
