Description
Atmospheric Science Support (ATMOS) Contract supports NASA’s Earth Sciences Division in advancing our understanding of Earth’s atmosphere, climate, and weather. Through ATMOS, scientists, engineers, and specialists work together to design, develop, and operate instruments, conduct field campaigns, analyze satellite and airborne data, and create models that inform global research.
AS&M is seeking a Scientific Visualization Specialist to support the Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) on a position to support NASA’s Earth Information Center (EIC). The EIC will provide a whole Earth view down to local information to visualize our planet. The EIC exhibits feature large, awe-inspiring visualizations, as well as interactive media, stories, exhibits, and narratives, to inspire action. Currently there are major EIC exhibits at NASA HQ, The Smithsonian’s Natural Museum of Natural History, and the Visitor Center at the Kennedy Space Center, with several more installations in the works.
This position will support this network of exhibits through the creation of interactive and immersive experiences that Feature NASA Earth Science datasets. This work will be onsite at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt Maryland.
Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Developing interactive data visualization exhibits and experiences.
Supporting our custom back-end python-based software that updates exhibit content across EIC locations.
Working with scientists to translate their observations, results, and datasets into compelling visuals.
Collaborating with communication specialists to determine ways to communicate the latest NASA science.
Processing a variety of scientific datasets in a variety of formats to enable import into 3D animation and visualization software.
Required Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship required. Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field such as Earth and physical sciences, computer sciences, technology, engineering, math, or related field, and relevant experience
Computer programming experience (python)
Demonstrated ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.
Solid communication skills, both oral and written.
Experience with a variety of operating systems (Linux, PC)
Ability to meet NASA IT security requirements and to obtain a NASA badge to work onsite at GSFC.
A positive attitude, the ability to work well as part of a team, and the willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Game Engines and XR development platforms (Unity)
Experience working with scientific datasets and data formats (netCDF, etc.).
Experience designing user interfaces
Graphic design experience
Experience 3D modelling and animation software such as Houdini or Blender
