Scientific Visualization Developer

(Job ID# ASM26SVD020)

Location: NASA GSFC, Greenbelt, MD

Type: Full Time, On Site

Pay Range: $70,000 - $77,000 annual base salary (DOE)

Description

Atmospheric Science Support (ATMOS) Contract supports NASA’s Earth Sciences Division in advancing our understanding of Earth’s atmosphere, climate, and weather. Through ATMOS, scientists, engineers, and specialists work together to design, develop, and operate instruments, conduct field campaigns, analyze satellite and airborne data, and create models that inform global research.

AS&M is seeking a Scientific Visualization Developer to support the Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). You will join a dynamic, collaborative team of science visualization experts, creatives and technologists dedicated to making complex NASA science accessible and engaging.

In this role, you will primarily support NASA’s Earth Information Center (EIC), which provides a comprehensive view of our planet – from global scale down to local environments. The EIC comprises a diverse set of interactive exhibits and large public displays, that feature custom created content that waves together compelling narratives and awe-inspiring visualizations, designed to engage the public and inspire a deeper connection to NASA’s mission. Currently, major EIC exhibits are hosted at NASA Headquarters, the Smithsonian’s Natural Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., and at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, with several more in development.

This position will support our expanding network of installations through the creation of data-driven visualizations (e.g: interactive, web and/or cinematic) while also managing the technical pipelines that keep these exhibits running smoothly. This work will be conducted onsite at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland and will require occasional travel to various exhibit installations.

Applicants are encouraged to submit a demo or links to recent projects related to data visualization and/or interactives for review alongside their resume.

Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing data-driven visualizations (interactive, web-based, and/or exhibits and experiences).

  • Supporting and developing custom back-end Python-based software that updates and distributes exhibit content across EIC locations.

  • Processing scientific datasets in a variety of formats to enable import into visualization and/or 3D animation software.

  • Working with scientists to translate observations, results, and datasets into compelling visuals.

  • Collaborating with communication specialists to determine ways to share the latest NASA science results.

  • Utilizing cloud computing platforms and infrastructure (such as AWS).

  • Working with version control systems and collaborative development platforms (e.g., GitHub, GitLab) to manage codebases and pipelines.

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship is required. Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation, meet NASA IT security requirements and to obtain a NASA badge to work onsite at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (such as Earth and physical sciences, computer sciences, technology, engineering, math, or a related field) and relevant experience.

  • Computer programming experience, specifically in Python.

  • Computer graphics experience

  • Experience with a variety of operating systems (Linux, Mac, PC)

  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.

  • Solid communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Ability to have a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and a team-oriented mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with scientific datasets and data formats (netCDF, etc.)

  • Experience with game engines and XR development platforms (Unity)

  • Experience with interactive visualizations

  • Experience with 3D modeling and animation software such as Houdini, Blender or similar tools

  • Experience designing user interfaces

  • Familiarity with hardware setup and maintenance, including display systems, AV equipment, media players, and basic hardware troubleshooting.

If selected for an interview, please be prepared to share a portfolio of your work with the hiring team.
