Description
Atmospheric Science Support (ATMOS) Contract supports NASA’s Earth Sciences Division in advancing our understanding of Earth’s atmosphere, climate, and weather. Through ATMOS, scientists, engineers, and specialists work together to design, develop, and operate instruments, conduct field campaigns, analyze satellite and airborne data, and create models that inform global research.
AS&M is seeking a highly skilled Instrument Engineer IV to support NASA GFSC for its Atmospheric Science Support (ATMOS) Contract. The Instrument Engineer IV supports NASA scientists by overseeing advanced instrument design and integration. This senior-level role includes field deployment, documentation, and management of engineering tasks.
ATMOS is a NASA support services contract that provides advanced scientific, engineering, and technical expertise to enable Earth and space science missions. The program supports research, data analysis, technology development, and mission operations across multiple NASA centers. Through ATMOS, our teams deliver innovative solutions that help advance NASA’s mission and expand scientific discovery.
In this role, the Instrument Engineer IV will assist senior engineers and project scientists with the design, fabrication, and integration of atmospheric measurement instruments. The position emphasizes hands-on experience with hardware assembly, electronic systems, and software-controlled data acquisition, preparing instruments for use in both laboratory and field research.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee planning, design, and integration of instruments.
Manage documentation of designs and drawings.
Operate instruments at GSFC or field missions.
Provide leadership / management to other instrument engineers.
Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship required.
Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
Required Qualifications
B.S. in physics, optics, electrical, mechanical, or optical engineering, or
High school diploma, plus four years of experience in a relevant technical position. This experience can include technical coursework at a college, university or community college, and may also include military training and experience. This experience is in addition to the experience required for the position level.
10+ years of experience in instrument design.
At least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
Proficiency in LabVIEW for data acquisition.
Strong knowledge of flight hardware design and assembly.
